So go back in your stack of mags and take a look.

Fashionista: First off, just so everyone’s sure, how exactly do you pronounce your name? Is it “ER-dem” or “er-DEM?”
Erdem Moralioglu: Hahaha! Honestly, say it any which way you like. I get both all the time. And when it comes to saying my last name, “Moralioglu,” just remember to divide it into three parts: “Moralee-oh-glue.” See? Easy!

TARGET
“TARGET”
adds Canadian fashion content to their Canadian stores with their arrival in Canada.
First up, nationally, “ROOTS” for Spring 2013, and in Quebec, in 2014, a Quebec
designer. These are marvellous opportunities for the Canadian designers
involved and the Canadian public.
1. What
other Canadian brands will follow in Roots "cross Canada" footsteps ?
2. Will
target be offering the "Quebec designer for the Quebec stores"
opportunity to other designers in other provinces?
And
further into the future:
3. Will
the provincial designers go on to become national contenders?
4. Will
designers who meet the "cross Canada" criteria be considered as
candidates for the U.S. stores?

“We are
very pleased with the caliber of the entries we received and think this speaks
to the quality of design talent that Quebec is known for,” commented John
Morioka, Senior Vice President, Merchandising, Target Canada. “participating in
the selection process was energizing and I look forward to seeing our five
finalists bring their collections to life on the runway. While it will be
difficult to select one winner from the amazing design capabilities I have seen
so far, I look forward to working with the winner to bring our first Quebec

“As
previously announced, Target plans to open 124 stores in Canada beginning in 2013,

THE HOCKEY SWEATER
I am quite sure many will want to shun the concept of Canadian Fashion and Hockey as partners, not highbrow enough for them, or worse, too Canadian....but I'll risk it!
"ROD PERRY" writing for the "CBC" leads me to the "HOCKEY HALL OF FAME" and a look at one of what I call "CANADA'S OWN: HERITAGE GARMENTS"
"Hockey Night in Canada kicks off in record fashion"
"The 60th season of CBC’s "HOCKEY NIGHT IN CANADA" kicked off in spectacular fashion on Saturday night. (19.01.2013)
On average, a record 3.3 million viewers tuned in to the CBC’s broadcast of the "TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS" 2-1 win over the "MONTREAL CANADIENS", making it the most watched Prime East regular-season game ever on the network.
The game reached nearly 27 per cent of the population, or 9.2 million Canadians. The previous mark for viewership of a Leafs-Habs game was set in 2007 (2.85 million)."
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/hockey/nhl/story/2013/01/21/sp-nhl-hockey-night-in-canada-record-ratings.html
Rod Perry, CBC Sports
And what were they wearing? The one piece of apparel that has carried our name forward around the globe for several decades. The "CANADIAN HOCKEY SWEATER"!
This is what lead me to the "HOCKEY HALL OF FAME", I wanted a closeup look...
There is something representative of every decade that Canadians, playing hockey at an organised level, present here. You can see the various decades' differences, in the fabric, as these sweaters travel through small guage wool knits to the marvels of todays finest "techno" fabrics,
and in the fonts and the iconography giving us the who's who signal their era.
This is fashion (the prevailing custom) in my eyes. Nope, not off the runway, but off the ice, and on to the street. Take a look around most centers where college age kids congregate and you will see it. On the streets of any Canadian city on game night, on males and females of all ages.
( I will always question the words fashion and clothing and apparel and costume, their semantics and uses, and why I put both clothing and fashion in the blog title, I don't want to tread on toes, but I will questions those who make the "rules"!)
Terminology aside, a big deal in our Canadian Heritage.

Two beautiful knit wool examples from 1928 and 1932 respectively:

"THE HOCKEY SWEATER" pictured on our current five dollar bill with the words:
"Les hivers de mon enfance étaient des saisons longues, longues. Nous vivions en trois lieux: l'école, l'église et la patinoire; mais la vraie vie était sur la patinoire."
The words on the bill, taken from the wonderful story by "ROCH CARRIER", "THE HOCKEY SWEATER""The winters of my childhood were long, long seasons. We lived in three places - the school, the church and the skating rink - but our real life was on the skating rink."
First a tale told on "CBC RADIO"...Carrier responding to the question of French and English, with a memory of his childhood, and then published in 1979 under the title "Une abominable feuille d'érable sur la glace" ("An abominable maple leaf on the ice"). A story that got the publics attention and was adapted into an animated short illustrated by Sheldon Cohen, called The Sweater (Le Chandail) by the "NATIONAL FILM BOARD OF CANADA / (NFB)" in 1980. See it on the link...
And published as a book, with Carrier's words, translated by Sheila Fischman and Cohen's illustrations, by Tundra in 1982, that is still in print!
Carrier's hero, Maurice "Rocket" Richard
There is a great deal of information of the sweaters detailed past and present available on the internet:
Joe Pelletier, freelance hockey journalist and the Hockey History Blogger,
Chronicling the entire history of NHL uniforms
Written and illustrated by Andrew M. Greenstein
The sweaters, now commonly known as "the jersey", worn by players internationally and the ones of the Canadian Elites, those of "TEAM CANADA" sporting the maple leaf, in various incarnations,.
The first one, for the 1920 Olympics in Belgium:
"Wearing Our Culture on Centre Ice"
"One of the most anticipated events for Canadians at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games is when Canada's hockey teams will take the stage to fight for Olympic gold on home ice. In addition to cheering for our teams, these games are a great opportunity to showcase Canadian Aboriginal art displayed on the athletes' jerseys.
During the 2010 Winter Games, men's, women's and ice sledge hockey teams will proudly wear Olympic jerseys designed by First Nation artist "DEBRA SPARROW" from Musqueam, British Columbia. These jerseys are the product of her determination to teach the world about Aboriginal peoples in Canada through "MUSQUEAM" and "SALISH" designs."
And if that is not enough to put this garment into icon status, how about adding in some dollar values...
"Paul Henderson's jersey sells for record $1.2M" auctioneer
"Montreal-based auction house says it's received a certificate from the Guinness World Records about the jersey Henderson was wearing when he scored the winning goal in the 1972 Summit Series against the Soviets.
Classic Auctions says it has been informed that Guinness classified it as the most expensive hockey jersey ever sold at auction.
The winning bid came in at $1.275 million, two years ago."
The Canadian Press

Just in case you not up on your auction prices for costume / uniform / clothing, here are several for comparison:
The ivory rayon-acetate dress worn by "Marilyn Monroe"
in "The Seven Year Itch" (USA 1955) raised $4.6 million (£2.8 million) at an
auction held at The Paley Center for Media in Los Angeles, California, USA, on
June 18 2011.
"Michael Jackson’s" ‘Thriller’ jacket was placed on auction and was sold for an astounding $1.8 million
The bedazzled, ruby slippers that "Judy Garland" wore in the "Wizard Of Oz" sold for a cool $2 million.
"THE HOCKEY SWEATER", the design, in constant evolution, the sentiment, solid.

I can see it...and it does sound Canadian... considering the weather here in Toronto, windy, snowy and cold, as I write this...
An excerpt from the transcripton of the above:
"There's no doubt that our clothes can reflect a definite Canadian personality," explains CBC's Shirley Brett. In this 1954 radio clip, she's reporting on the first all-Canadian fashion show, staged in Montreal by 13 Canadian fashion designers. After describing some of the designs on display, Brett comes to her own conclusions on what Canada's fashion world is all about. "I had the feeling that Canadian fashion designers - like our diplomats - can compromise, can adapt and co-exist and that like our diplomats they can also strike out on their own.."
The last part of the comment certainly forecast what was to come from Rad Hourani...
And now, if you will...please answer these 2 questions...
"In today's fashion world, does Canada have a clear national identity?
Does any country have a clear national identity?"
Don't think too long, it should pop into your fashion focus quickly if it's there....let me know what you think!

RAD HOURANI
MULTIPLE FIRSTS FROM "RAD HOURANI"
Hourani: Born in Jordan, moved to Canada age 16, currently makes New York and Paris home.
He launched his first collection, "RAD by RAD HOURANI" 5 years ago.
The first Canadian Fashion Designer invited by the Chambre de Syndicale to be invited to show as a guest by the Fédération Française de la Couture, du Prêt-à-Porter des Couturiers et des Créateurs de Mode.
Rad, in his Haute Couture debut, will be the first designer to show a "unisex" collection.
CONGRATULATIONS!!
If you don't already know of "RAD HOURANI", some bits and pieces to get you started on the "Canadian Fashion Designer".
From the "RAD HOURANI" website:
"I STARTED IMAGINING CLOTHES THE SAME WAY I STARTED CREATING IMAGES: WITH A SENSE OF CURIOSITY AND INNOCENCE DRIVEN BY MY NO-BACKGROUND BACKGROUND. NO SCHOOL. NO TEACHERS. NO TELLY. NO BOUNDARIES. NO FORMATTING. I LIKE THE IDEA OF A WORLD THAT WE COULD LIVE AND SHAPE BY OURSELVES"

In an interview from "REALSTYLE MAGAZINE"
"Rad Hourani: I design timeless pieces. I don’t work with trends or what the fashion machine is about; I create my own rules, and I’m very thankful to have great clients that have taste, elegance and great minds. They see themselves in what I do, and it is one of the greatest gifts I have ever received.
Rad Hourani and RAD by Rad Hourani, are ultimately unisex"
http://www.realstylenetwork.com/blogs/fashion-and-style/2012/07/interview-rad-hourani-on-his-first-haute-couture-unisex-collection/
From "JEANNE BEKER" in the "TORONTO STAR"
PARIS—The notion of seeing Didier Grumbach, long-time head of the revered Chambre Syndicale, which governs haute couture in France, at the Canadian Cultural Centre to watch the offerings of a young Canadian designer warmed the cockles of this seasoned fashion writer’s heart.
... Still, Hourani’s ready-to-wear line, which is sold in 30 countries, has resonated with those looking for something truly unique and edgy. And his first unofficial couture collection, produced last season, was a huge success.
...Hourani will be the first to tell you that he’s uncompromising, and sometimes in fashion, that can be tough. But judging from this elegant collection, Hourani’s passion and point of view, could not only catapult him onto the world’s fashion stage, but could also ensure that he stays there"

INDIVIDUALS / INTRODUCTIONS
"...including the garments, the companies and the individuals who are, or have been,
a part of our great Canadian clothing and fashion heritage and future..."
And by "individuals" just who am I talking about?
The "Canadian Fashion Designers" are the most visible people in the Canadian fashion world and their names are the ones you may already recognise. They are the "individuals" in my reportage most frequently and their always increasing number will populate the "labels" list here at "clothingcanadafashion" most rapidly.
The "Canadian Fashion Media", the publishers, the writers, the bloggers and tweeters, are those that, although on the masthead with the "Canadian Fashion Designers" are not as often noted. Here at "clothingcanadafashion" these "individuals" will not only be in the headlines but in my coverage, so that you can know them better and they will further populate the "labels" list.
The "Canadian Fashion Support System", are the manufacturers, the retailers, the organisations and the associations, the educators and the curators in museums and schools, and others, who's names rarely appear anywhere, if at all. I will use "clothingcanadafashion" to bring their names forward, and introduce you to these "individuals" as they too become inhabitants of the blog and join the "labels" list.
With that said, let me get on with the the "INTRODUCTIONS" part of todays blog...
It's always amazing to make a succesful introduction!
Yesterday, in between teaching classes at the "ACADEMY OF DESIGN" I had the pleasure of introducing "Canadian Fashion Media" member, "DORIS MONTANERA", to the work of "KENN NORMAN and JONATHON WALFORD", members of the "Canadian Fashion Support System".
Doris, in case you have not previously noticed her name amongst her words, is a "Lifestyle writer and editor by day. Aspiring book author by night."*, a past editor of the late "STYLE" print magazine, (the lamented journal to those inside the Canadian fashion industry), a fellow educator and an amazing source of inspiration and answers, to her followers, her students and to me! You can follow Doris' insights on twitter https://twitter.com/DorisMontanera and the many places her printed words are published.
"Jonathan and Kenn, who's work you may have seen but who's names you most likely did not, among their many individual and combined contributions to fashion, (check the "about" tab on Jonathon's blog for details), and whom I met at the "COSTUME SOCIETY OF ONTARIO" in the 1990's , (Jonathon was then President and Kenn, the Treasurer), are the founders of the "FASHION HISTORY MUSUEM (FHM).
Kenn is Chair and CEO, and Jonathan is the Curatorial Director, of the "FHM". Jonathan blogs about the fashion world on "JONATHON WALFORD'S BLOG" (the Kickshaw Productions website) http://kickshawproductions.com/blog/.
Included amongst Doris' tweets that day "I feel like I found buried treasure. For lovers of fashion & beauty history, check out http://kickshawproductions.com/blog/"*
Success!
Consider this my, hopefully as succesful, introduction to the many above, to you!! They will appear again here on "clothingcanadafashion"!

MORE FROM THE MAGS...FLARE Dec 2012...Editor MIRANDA PURVES gifts Keira Knightly with a vintage dress, hope it was a CANADIAN vintage dress! She also puts "undies made in Toronto", by FORTNIGHT LINGERIE and "handmade OJIBWAY MOCS" on her shopping list...nice choices!
Watch for an upcoming piece on this blog about the mocs and also check out the Heritage section on the "clothingcanadafashion" website for more from our Aboriginal past and present!
Contributing Editor MOSHA LUNDSTROM HALBERT does a great profile on CHRISTINA REMENYI, the designer of the forementioned FORTNIGHT LINGERIE. REMENYI happily mentions that her work is "now winning coveted space in top boudoir drawers of those who turn their nose up at disposable styles" Seems another Canadian Designer is willing to go that extra mile and makes their work in Canada, to make their work covetable.
However, she also notes the so often heard "I can't even tell you how much harder it is in the Canadian Market. Eighty to ninety percent of our retailers are American. Everyone there is very excited by where it's made. A lot of the response I get here is "We just carry European lingerie. Sorry."" The refrain is deafening, I've heard it myself, and I've heard so many others say it. Do we blame the Canadian Retailer? Or do we blame the Canadian shopper won't buy "Made in Canada"? Its a vicious circle we are caught in. Perhaps our own historic Hudson's Bay Company, now owned by Americans will buy it and bring it home? At any rate, bravo to Christina! Hopefully the media coverage will help inform those who need to know...
Also in the issue, a couple of nice shots of CHLOE COMME PARRIS!
In the "GRID" Jan. 17/2013 Issue, ERIN PEHLIVAN gives some nice coverage to "Made in Toronto Canada" label, MUTTONHEAD and its founder MEG SINCLAIR who in her search for the makers of a quality product went "to over 50 different properties" she says "The (factories) we work with now actually care about making your product better" Worth the work I would say, as she now ships to "50 stores around the world". PEHLIVAN also explains that "Because of strict federal laws on raw-material imports into Canada, duties on textiles have become so expensive that it's cheaper to outsource work to overseas manufacturers. but according to the Canadian apparel federation, some Canadian companies are reconsidering domestic production if gas and transportaton prices continue to rise abroad. I am hoping this increased domestic production is more than a trend!
And just so you know I am on the trail, I have e'd all those I mention seeking publishable pics, and more detailed info on these designers, in the pursuit of making this "THE SOURCE FOR ALL THINGS CANADA IN THE WORLD OF CLOTHING AND FASHION"...wish me luck and stay posted!

WINTER MAGS 1
I will be feeding this blog from the present and the past...
I have over 30 years of Canadian Designer info archived, and there is new info being added every day, so a little from one and a little from another.
I will try for as many pictures as possible, because after all, what is fashion if we can't see it...although there are some amazing words floating around from some of Canada's press, however, I am being very careful to not tread on the intellectual, artisitic, or copywritten property of others and so I am also in the process of directly contacting any and all that I can before I will publish anything they might own.
So don't give up if the majority of what you see is words, there will be plenty more to come.
You will also notice that when I do mention someone I will try to include a link to their visible media presence so you can find them!
If you have pics and or info, please do not hesitate to contact me...the more input the better....
So working throught the winter mags I will point out
"FASHION" WINTER 2013 and their new slant on Canadian content. Yeah!!
Editor-in-Chief; BERNADETTE MORRA, in her editor's letter speaks glowingly of Canadian design talent LUCIAN MATIS and DAVID DIXON, and points out the "level of artistic craft has inspired "Patriot Love" (page 254), a regular feature spotlighting Canadian design." REALLY EXCITING NEWS!! Their "first up, "Montreal's PAVONI".
The issue also gives a nice bit of coverage to "New York-based, Edmonton-raised designer newbie ANGELIQUE CHMIELEWSKI", "former Montrealer...London-based designer "JOCELYN PICARD and his label "LYN", "Montreal-based leather -goods label "RUDSAK" and its "founder and chief visionary" EVIK ASATOORIAN.
Contributor SARAH NICOLE PRICKETT asks "Is Canadian fashion glamorous?' and gives a nice call out to CALLA, DAVID DIXON, DENIS GAGNON, ERDEM, GRETA CONSTANTINE, LUCIAN MATIS, MIKHAEL KALE, OBAKKI, PINK TARTAN and TAVAN & MITTO. She suggests "Canadian designers who keep their processes small can turn our country's basic fashion infrastruture, and their own limited budgets, into a marketing strength. Offer artisanship and the conscientious shopper will come."
I have been saying and teaching a similar thought for many years, "don't try to compete with the Gap, you can't, but you can do the unique and limited things that they can't" Today's customer is intelligent and can, with a little guidance, put the two together, and both parties go on to succeed. And as to bringing it home, yes! Here is hoping. Its what this blog is about, "COLLECTED WE STAND"
If you noticed in a recent issue of Vogue magazine, they discuss how many American designers are doing their "making at home in the USA". And so are we, and not following behind... as I mentioned in my first entry, there on FRANCO MIRABELLI'S store front, "IMAGINED, DESIGNED AND CREATED IN CANADA"

COLLECTED, WE STAND…
I am in the process of developing a highly comprehensive
website “ClothingCanadaFashion” as an archive and data base chronicling the
story of Canadian Clothing and Fashion from pre confederation to the present, and
am including the garments, the companies and the individuals who are, or have
been, a part of our great Canadian clothing and fashion heritage and future.
IT IS TIME....
I like to work on hunches, and I like it even better when things start to flow with me....it tells me I am heading in the right direction!
And, while walking to the Academy this week, up Yonge St., I passed " Mirabelli",
I always look in the window, but this time a new addition, there on the bottom right, "
"FRANCO MIRABELLI
IMAGINED, DESIGNED AND CREATED IN CANADA"
WAY TO GO FRANCO...
And while snapping the pic for the new blog, Franco himself came out, strange occurence as his main locale is the factory, and I haven't seen him in over 25 years. So nice to connect in person!
I am taking that as my omen to get moving on this project....
you will notice that at the end of each post I will add any designers names and websites that I have not already posted...
for further information you can also go to "labels" and click to find complete listing for all the designers so far mentioned...
